A portrait is more than just a likeness of an individual; it should convey something of their personality, character and interests. To do this succesfully requires the subject to be relaxed and comfortable, so I prefer, where possible to photograph portrait subjects in a place that they are familiar with. To my mind, a portrait is a very wide concept - if you are a committed sportsman, then an image of you taking part in that sport sums you up much better than a studio photograph could.
